Botox and Fillers Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved treatment that reduces the appearance of worry lines between your brows and crow’s feet wrinkles around the corners of your eyes. It’s among the most well-established cosmetic treatments in the United States.

Botox injections reduce wrinkles by relaxing the muscles that cause them to appear. Crow’s feet and vertical lines in between your brows result from repeated muscle contractions. By deactivating these muscles, the lines and wrinkles fade.

What are dermal fillers?

Injectable fillers help renew the youthful contour of your face by restoring volume that may have decreased with age. By filling in areas of lost volume, this treatment reduces the appearance of many common signs of aging, such as:

  • Wrinkles
  • Deep facial folds
  • Sunken cheeks
  • Loose, droopy skin
  • Marionette lines around your mouth
  • Thin lips

Depending on your needs and aesthetic goals, your  Superior Physical Medicine provider can recommend which dermal fillers would be best suited for your circumstances.

What is the difference between Botox and filler injections?

Botox and fillers are both injectable treatments, but they serve different purposes. For complete facial rejuvenation without surgery, you may wish to combine both Botox and filler injections.

Botox

Botox works specifically on crow’s feet wrinkles and frown lines on your forehead. During a Botox treatment, your provider injects a tiny amount of a highly purified botulinum toxin protein to relax the muscles that cause these lines to appear.

Fillers

Fillers, or dermal fillers, reduce wrinkles that appear from age or gravity. Your provider injects a small amount of the filler into the treatment area, which smooths out wrinkles by restoring lost volume.

What should I expect from a Botox or filler treatment?

First, your provider evaluates your skin and reviews your medical history to make sure injections are right for you. Based on your unique concerns and beauty goals, he creates a customized treatment plan that may include Botox, fillers, or both.

During treatment, your Superior Physical Medicine provider uses a very fine needle to inject the medicine into specific areas on your face. The amount of time depends on the type of treatment you get, but most Botox injections take less than 10 minutes.

You may experience redness or temporary bruising at the injection site, but this typically fades within a day or two.
